The Twelve Days of Christmas - historia
Tytułowe „twelve days of Christmas”, („dwanaście dni Świąt Bożego Narodzenia”), to okres dwunastu dni między pierwszym dniem świąt Bożego Narodzenia i Świętem Trzech Króli. Słowa kolędy pojawiły się po raz pierwszy w książce pt. „Mirth Without Mischief” („Zabawy bez psot”), opublikowanej około roku 1780 w Anglii, gdzie kolęda przedstawiona jest w charakterze zabawy, gry dla dzieci, w której recytują one kolejno następujące po sobie wersy kolędy, aby pierwsze z nich, które się pomyli, mogło zostać ukarane karą w formie utraty tzw. fanta (przedmiotu). Melodia kolędy jest zdecydowanie starsza i pochodzi z Francji.

„N-tego dnia Świąt luba ma do mnie posłała:
Dwunastu bębniarzy w bębny bębniących,
Jedenastu flecistów na fletach grających,
Dziesięciu panów skaczących,
Dziewięć pannic tańczących,
Osiem służących krowy dojących,
Siedem łabędzi pływających,
Sześć gęsi odpoczywających,
Pięć złotych obrączek,
Cztery kosy,
Trzy francuskie kwoki,
Dwie turkawki i
Jedną kuropatwę na gruszy.”
Calling birds występuje we współczesnej wersji tekstu. W tradycyjnej angielskiej wersji było colly birds - Colly (lub collie) znaczy "czarny" (od coal=węgiel), czyli współcześnie blackbird = kos (gatunek ptaka).
